Kids and Caffeine

My longtime cohort Ben Foote has posted an interesting rant on his website regarding caffeine dependency. I myself have been trying to abstain from coffee for about 6 months now for many of the same reasons he lists. I’ve always had trouble sleeping and I’m very sensitive to stimulants like caffeine.

As most people know, in low doses caffeine is relatively harmless and even has beneficial side effects, most of which involve an increase in cognitive ability and reaction times. As with all things, moderation is the key. Though coffee has been part of the human diet for over a 1,000 years and has grown to be one of the most popular drinks in the world, I take issue with the way that caffeine is currently being marketed. More specifically, I take issue with how it is marketed towards the youth. The last thing most kids need right now is more stimulation, especially when that stimulation comes in a little, shiny, phallic can and not from the natural world they seem to be becoming more adapt at shutting out.

While I do personally believe in cognitive liberty, I wonder how long it will take for growing over-caffeinated hearts to start failing.

Dude…I didn’t know you had a website. Awesome. I’ll add a link on my site.

And as an update, I am still drinking caffeine by the way. I can’t kick it.

GREAT blog! Came here via the rampage quotes; stayed for the rest.

I’m going through the same thing myself. Had a fountain soda machine (free) at my last job, and was drinking 6-10 large Solo brand cups of Mt Dew a day. Tried to give it up, was successful for a while, but then got into the energy drink game. I’ve cut back significantly, but as much as I want to completely stop, I really can’t. It’s kind of scary, to be honest. Good to see I’m not alone.
